I know race car driver Danica Patrick had often talked about being "blind" without glasses/contacts, so I wondered if you could ever find footage of her in specs.

Looks like we can now:

Post below should say "in glasses"

She talks about deciding to wear glasses in competition:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2017/10/07/in_praise_of_morgan_hurd_glasses_wearing_gymnastics_world_champion.html

“I tried contacts,” she explained, “but they made my eyeballs dry, and when I got stuff in my eyes, I had to take them out and put them back in.”

Looks like we might be seeing those specs in the next Olympics.

Hannah Russell, the GB Paralympic swimmer was wearing her myodisc glasses today in pictures covering Team GB returning from Rio. She's obviously very myopic, in the -20 something range but I wonder if she has any other visual impairment. Her eyes are quite large and turn in slightly and in one newspaper article she was described as suffering from "extreme myopia" but no other mention of her vision was made. Would extreme myopia be enough to earn a Paralympic classification? Surely one would have to be classified as "legally blind", i.e. visually impaired even with correction? She swims in the S12 and S13 categories but the definition of these seems quite vague from what I can find out. If you Google images of her she is quite clearly wearing contact lenses when she swims and so I wonder what exactly she can see and how much it impairs her ability to swim. I notice that swimmers in the S11 category wear blacked out goggles so they are all completely blind while swimming. I'm not sure if this is the case for the S12 and S13 categories. She's also very attractive by the way. The picture posted on Aug 17th doesn't do her justice.

Thanks Jamie. After reading your post I was able to find a picture of Dale wearing glasses while reading. Guess between the inevitability of presbyopia and the concussion----glasses are here to stay.

Jamie37 14 Sep 2016, 15:38

Maurice,

Dale Jr. had actually posted a pic of them pre-concussion as something he acquired during the off season as he is at the age around 40 where was having difficulty with small print. He mentioned that when he put the pic up

Although I agree has been interesting to see him wearing the glasses more frequently.

Maurice 14 Sep 2016, 09:13

Saw video of Nascar driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr. wearing glasses as a result of a concussion. Plus lenses. I wonder if he will need to wear glasses from now on.

Michelle Wie is attractive. I could be that slim if I was stretched out as tall as her. I probably only come up to her waist. I actually prefer being curvy and a lot of people like me being curvy!😁

I find British cyclist Laura Trott more attractive, mainly because she and my beautiful girlfriend look similar. Long lost sisters?😄 I don't think Laura wears glasses only safety glasses when cycling. It won't come as a surprise to you all that her fiance Jason Kenny (see Kevin's post) does nothing for me with or without glasses but what I do like is that it is highly likely that Laura has tried on Jason's glasses. If only someone had photographed that. Maybe one day Laura will need glasses. They are both brilliant athletes and also they are both genuinely nice people and I hope that they have a long and happy marriage (they were offered a large amount of money by a magazine for exclusive photos of their wedding. They declined the offer. They don't want to be celebrities they just want to be Mr and Mrs Kenny living quietly in their cottage in the countryside with their dogs. I think the only time they would like some attention is when they are in races and the support of people watching will help them along.)

Lv2c4i 28 Aug 2016, 05:28

Thanks for the Michelle Wie piks. She is an attractive (and tall) young woman with great taste in eyewear. Some eyewear operation should sign her up as a model and spokesperson.

As if proof was needed that girls with glasses are the best, Belgium's leading tennis GWG Kirsten Flipkens just beat Venus Williams in the first round of the Olympic Tennis while wearing her amazing Oakley glasses with a frame in the colours of the Belgian flag. She has a mild to moderate minus prescription but the frames are just amazing.

Nothing against Venus but I love to see an underdog winning, especially one with glasses as great as Kirsten's!

Being a bowler, I receive an email from the USBC each week with videos for allegedly improving one's game. One of the people involved is Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, age 51, who won many tournaments on the women's pro tour when there was one.

Sometime in the previous decade, she and her younger sister Cathy Dorin-Lizzi were given a major makeover that was featured on a TV show. Both women were given Lasik. I have not seen Cathy with glasses since, but Carolyn wears small, plastic, rectangular glasses all the time in the videos, and in the few times I have seen her on TV in the past several years. Perchance CDB's Lasik did not work? Before that, she wore glasses only when bowling, as she was somewhat nearsighted.

In news clips of the USA soccer/football team being congratulated by the president for their world cup win, the coach was sporting some spex that were never seen on the sidelines. Wonder if there are piks of any of the players wearing glasses? It's highly likely that some of them do need vision correction.

The big thing in Australia at the moment is the case against the Essendon Football Club and its coach James Hird on doping charges. It seems somebody may have filled the needle too full and there's hell to pay.

Fortunately Hirdy isn't taking it lying down. He has challenged the league and the Federal Government on several pretty basic points of law. Equally apparently somebody on the other side seemed to think that since it was sport they didn't have to follow the normal rules for gathering evidence.

So we're treated to some wonderful courtroom stuff. albeit crawling round abstruse points of law and we

re glued to the TV screen.

A bonus in this is that Hirdy's yummy WAG (W actually) is filmed there with him at the back of the court looking totally consumable in glasses. First time for me to see this delightful sight. Be patient with this embedded video until about 1.40 or so when you can see what the excitement's about

Wow, that guy is off the charts tall and extremely myopic,as is especially seen in the close up side view showing the significant lens thickness. Hope we see him in the NBA someday so he can fulfill his goal of taking care of his Mom and brother(s).

All of the forwards on the Philadelphia Flyers surely would benefit by wearing glasses -- not just to look hot, but to find the net and score more.

Willy and Yoyo

Sorry about that. I missed that about what she missed. Now of course that makes sense. Gosh hard to believe she is already 41. Doesn't seem that long ago.

Willy 17 Sep 2013, 13:40

The chart is a few random questions given to some stars of the US 1999 Womens World Cup team, and their responses. The last column at the top says "I miss my..." Mia Hamm's reponse is "I miss my 20/20 vision," so the implication is she now has glasses. She is 41, so the time would be about right for reading glasses, although that might not usually be expressed as a loss of 20/20 vision....

Yoyo 17 Sep 2013, 13:39

She says she misses having 20/20 vision. She's 41 now -- might be needing reading glasses.

Soundmanpt 17 Sep 2013, 12:58

Willy

Any idea what that chart means and what Mia Hamm meant by 20/20 vision in that box? Is she saying she had her eyes examined and she has 20/20 vision?

Melyssa 22 Aug 2013, 15:28

Soundmanpt,

Here in the Philadelphia area we baseball fans would love it if the Phillies would run their or-guh-nye-zay-shun like the Cardinals do. You may as well buy your playoff tickets now. Want to switch ownership and front offices? LOL

As for the college scene, the glasses obviously helped some, but being ambidextrous, which helped me take more notes and complete essay questions on tests faster, was a good thing as well. Of course, emphasizing studying over socializing was the big sacrifice, but I wanted my degrees, and that was most important.

Soundmanpt 22 Aug 2013, 15:19

Melyssa

Yeah, were freakin out here in St. Louis with our Cardinals not playing like we think they should be playing but I guess we should be happy being 20 game over 500. I still think we won't go far in the playoffs with so many young starters. They will probably all be pretty good, but they seem to get rattled if anything goes wrong for them. It's nice to strike out 8 in 5 innings but not if your going to walk 4 as well.

I'm betting it' s not glasses that made you smart or even look smart.

Melyssa 22 Aug 2013, 14:55

A.P.: I sure would, but only if I could send Jimmy Popup home to Oakland.

Phanatic: Right on both counts!

The stereotype goes that people who wear glasses are smarter overall than people who don't. In my case, it was drop-temples and cat's-eyes that helped me graduate Magna Cum Laude from college. :) In Ruin Tomorrow Junior's case, the Stanford alumnus is an imbecile, glasses or not.

Phanatic 21 Aug 2013, 22:00

I'm sure Melyssa would rather the Phils improve their bullpen and learn how to hit the ball once again...

A. P. 21 Aug 2013, 20:46

Crystal Veil

I wish I could recall the name of the magazine it was in, but as best I can recall it was a men's magazine. Someone in here commented on it as well at the time. Even a lot of the news magazines reported the full top 10 on the list.

Crystal Veil 05 Aug 2013, 17:06

Soundmanpt & Claire,

I hope you don't mind me interfering with your chat - what you mention, Soundmanpt, about that survey in the UK is really encouraging. The recent hipster glasses trend may have done wonders :). I notice a slow but steady turn of appreciation for glasses in Holland as well, even on TV!

Soundmanpt 05 Aug 2013, 16:09

Clare

I just reread what I posted to you and I had a big mistake in it. I really need to start proof reading what I type. Anyway near the end I said "You honestly have come a very long way and even though you still prefer contacts, your NOT much more confident then you used to be". I didn't mean for the word not to be in there at all. I think you can tell it even makes more sense if you leave that word out. Besides you know I have told you before you have really gotten much better about wearing glasses.

Clare 05 Aug 2013, 14:18

Soundmanpt - no nothing to declare on the wedding front! And regular wearing of glasses, even in the City, hasn't attracted any admirers :(

Back to the comments on when people choose to wear glasses (which is where this post on Athletes started): I have one colleague who says she can't wear contacts in the office (I don't know why but she maybe suffers like me but isn't prepared to put up with it), I'd guess her Rx is around -4. Although she always wears glasses in the office I saw her dress to go to a black tie event and even she put in contacts. I am trying to psych myself up to be comfortable to wear contacts for social events. I do wear glasses at work but plan my contacts wear around what meetings and I have and - bizarrely - if I'm meeting someone new I always like to meet them first when I'm wearing contacts! I have a strange idea that I don't want people's first impression of me to be the blonde with glasses. Weird eh?

Soundmanpt 05 Aug 2013, 10:21

Clare

As you already well know in this forum most everyone would disagree with you about being less attractive wearing glasses, but about 2 years ago there was a survey done for some magazine and they asked a large number of men 10 things they found most attractive in women? Number 5 on the list was "glasses" That survey was done in the UK. Maybe in years past glasses were looked upon as somewhat of a flaw in a woman, but now not all the same way. Just like in that survey in that magazine men have found that a woman can be every bit as attractive wearing glasses as they are if they don't wear glasses. It's a shame that some of your friends haven't tested the waters and tried seeing the reactions they would get from being seen in glasses. At the very least it might provide them with a little more confidence to wear them. You honestly have come a very long way and even though you still prefer to wear contacts your not much more confident then you used to be. I'm sure no one has treated you any different when your wearing glasses compared to when your wearing contacts?

Interesting you mentioned "wearing glasses as a bride" A while back some posted pictures of some various brides wedding pictures in their wedding dress and wearing glasses. The pictures came form a site asking the question "Should I wear glasses or contacts on my wedding day?" It was interesting all the comments from past bride and engaged young women that were torn with the same question. There was great arguments for both sides on that one. Some said that since everyone was used to seeing them wearing glasses they were going to keep their glasses on. but there were some that said they had looked at there mother's wedding pictures and their mother wore her glasses but it looked funny because that was 25 years ago and her glasses looked so out of date. Some simply said they were getting contacts for their wedding day period. A few said that they hadn't been wearing glasses all that long so they thought they could see good enough without them. Some even said they were having some pictures with and with glasses. But I guess when it really comes down to it, that should be decided by the bride and groom.

Interesting you should be concerned about that, are you trying to tell us something? For you at least there is little doubt you will be a bride in contacts.

Clare 04 Aug 2013, 15:53

Soundmanpt - yes, there are people who are clueless and abuse contacts but I think the majority of people who love their contacts are people whose lifestyles better suit contacts or who just don't like how they look with glasses. It may be me but I think its only recently that the so-called risks of contacts have come to notice, I think people used to think they were the no-question alternative to glasses. Most of my friends wear contacts, there's no-one who would choose to wear glasses if they could wear contacts. I don't think any of those friends would feel that they are more attractive when they wear glasses, in fact one friend in the past insisted on taking them off because she 'looks better without glasses'. I think there's a long way to go before people consider the risks of contacts and choose to go the glasses route. that's a shame because I'd like to think that more people would choose glasses and so we'd get over the stigma that still exists - take for example the issues that exist when people need to wear glasses for their wedding.

astigmaphile 04 Aug 2013, 12:05

Soundmanpt,

Your reasons for not liking contacts are the same as mine.

I know you have to take proper care of them or you can damage your corneas and I'm lazy. Besides, I don't want to spend money on expensive toric lenses when I can get lined bifocals from Zenni Optical for $31.90.

Soundmanpt 04 Aug 2013, 11:30

Clare

Well admittedly I much prefer seeing an attractive young woman wearing glasses then one not wearing glasses. That in no means that non wearer isn't attractive, just not as much to me.

Also I really don't think contacts are all that good for the eyes. In a large part they are often abused by the wearer. As you well know they take a certain amount of care or you can easily get eye infections. And like yourself even with good care you can start to have problems with them. Add to that for too many I have come across think that by wearing contacts that's all they need and they never bother even getting glasses to go with them so they can relax their eyes. Then there are quite a few that only upgrade their contacts every year and ignore upgrading the lenses in their glasses enough due to cost.

But that said I think contacts are great for certain things and are a much better choice than glasses. I was a softball manager of a women's team many years ago. I had the team for 12 years and during that time some of my girls became glasses wearers. I actually suggested that they get contacts because wearing glasses was too dangerous. And like I said about this young lady golfer I am surprised she doesn't wear contacts because even though there is no danger wearing glasses her vision would be with hitting a golf ball.

Clare 04 Aug 2013, 00:38

Soundmanpt - what are the reasons that you don't like contacts?

Soundmanpt 03 Aug 2013, 13:58

Being a golfer myself I am very surprised that Marina is more comfortable wearing glasses than contacts. As much as I am not a big fan of contacts they are really a better option for sports. but since she is still only 19 she probably has always played wearing glasses so she is maybe feels more comfortable wearing glasses since that is what she is most used to.

Needless to say I am going to have to start watching more women's golf. I do know that there are several very attractive ladies playing competive golf these days. I keep hoping to see pictures of ones like Paula Creamer wearing glasses as well as others.

Carrie 03 Aug 2013, 11:00

Marina Stuetz is quite attractive. She's 19 like me! Still won't get me watching golf though.

Presby 03 Aug 2013, 10:26

Melyssa,

Very interesting that she does not have an eyewear provider as a sponsor. I kind of like Kirsten Flipkens eyewear choices better. She got to the Wimbledon semis and looks like she is - 3 or so.

Julian, if the frames are different, maybe the lenses are different...? Maybe Tim started out wearing non-Rx glasses for fun and then was convinced to have an eye exam just for the heck of it and, poof, got an Rx.

Julian 08 Mar 2013, 11:53

I'm not convinced those are the same specs in all three pictures - the frames look heavier in the first pic than in the other two. Anyone else think so?

Jamie32 08 Mar 2013, 10:52

Hi Plus,

Was wondering about Tim Lincecum too, but I believe I read they are sadly plano specs. But, still cool he wears them

Plus 08 Mar 2013, 09:45

Tim Lincecum, pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, has shown up wearing glasses recently. I can't decide if they're plano or Rx. The photo in the first link definitely makes them look plano, but in the second link, his eyes look pretty magnified by the lenses. A third photo also makes the lenses look like mild plus. Thoughts?

Anyone else seen Michael Phelps has been rocking the glasses as of late. Not sure if they're for fashion or not but me thinks maybe a 1st time wearer for real

Julian 18 Feb 2013, 04:34

Nice way of putting it Asdoo; of course it depends on the axis of the cylinder. In the case of the guy in the supermarket the image through his glasses was tall and thin.

Asdoo 18 Feb 2013, 02:47

You can tell glasses have cylinder if they make objects look tilty or swirly.

Julian 18 Feb 2013, 02:03

David: unless there's a lot of cylinder in a lens you can only tell by holding it up and either rotating it or turning round in a circle (sorry I'm describing very badly what I mean!) High astigmatism is unmistakeable - a glance at someone's glasses shows an image that's elongated rather than enlarged (or reduced in a case of myopia). I caught a glimpse of a guy with glasses like that in a supermarket the other day. If David Akers has astigmatism it isn't like that - but I wouldn't call him VERY hyperopic either.

Melyssa 10 Feb 2013, 09:44

I must say, Tim Lintscum does look better in that picture than he ever did on the field. First the 49ers' kicker David Akers, now the Giants' ace pitcher. Next up, David Lee of the Warriors, and then one of the San Jose Sharks (wearing teal frames, of course)!

Jamie32 09 Feb 2013, 20:56

Whoops, obviously should have been paying more attention reading the articles than looking at the eye candy.

Tim's glasses are plano, :(

David Akers should have worn his glasses in his last game with the Eagles -- not just to look so much better, but maybe he would have made some field goals to win the game.

Jamie32 04 Feb 2013, 11:45

Thanks for the link to David Akers. Boy, he looks really great/cute with those glasses on. And, he is almost 40 so guessing the need definitely there

I seemed to notice quite a few curlers in the Olympics that wore glasses. And there was several very nice looking young ladies then as well. I guess a sport like that since there is no contact makes it okay to wear glasses and good vision is needed as well.

The other day, as one of the local news channels was showing the Eagles (our local NFL team) getting off the bus in Pittsburgh (after they had flown from Philly, of course), the fawner -- uh, the sports reporter -- interviewed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (DRC). I did a double take, as DRC was wearing a pair of large, plastic, lavender frames to go with his lavender outfit. That makes DRC the second Eagle I've spotted in women's frames, following Hollis Thomas' small drop-temples about 5-7 years ago. DRC's frames would be more my style than HT's, as DRC's are larger.

British Paralympian Sophie Kamlish http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Sophie+Kamlish&hl;=en&rlz;=1C1CHMZ_en-GB___GB311&prmd;=imvns&source;=lnms&tbm;=isch&sa;=X&ei;=bllKUNj6J6OZ0QW0gIHYCg&ved;=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw;=1022&bih;=681 She's cute. She even wore a large flower in her hair during a race the other night!

Hannah Cockroft is another British Paralympian http://brightcove01.brightcove.com/23/309144693001/201208/1385/309144693001_1790098577001_ari-origin54-arc-161-1345202428718.jpg?pubId=309144693001 She'll look better when her skin clears. She doesn't wear her glasses when competing. She is very confident and has quite a dirty laugh! She has also been getting a lot of attention from men, possibly due to her being attractive with big boobs! As I've said before, I'm not really into blondes but I can see Hannah is attractive.

I'm really pleased to see that there lots of attractive Paralympians just as there was lots of attractive Olympians! Not being a big sports fan and only watching the Olympics and Paralympics occasionally, seeing these athletic bodies has been very enjoyable! I do find myself getting very excited watching some of the sports even if I don't understand the rules! Wheelchair rugby is amazing and scary!

Victoria Pendleton (British cyclist)

Pretty & flattering frames. Can't tell if they are prescription http://www.flickr.com/photos/35135827@N07/3529338325

Photo taken after the 2008 Olympics. These glasses look ok but I think she could have chosen ones that suited her better http://www.flickr.com/photos/37423935@N00/2946765529

Photo taken a few days ago near her home. As the article says a "down to earth look". She still looks beautiful http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2194714/Olympic-cyclist-Victoria-Pendleton-enjoys-simple-life-dog-walk-fianc-Scott.html

She doesn't seem to wear glasses when cycling but she still manages to look great as she hurtles around the track. I can see why she is such an inspiration for lovely Laura Trott - she can still look feminine and be a top athlete.

Carrie 25 Aug 2012, 11:04

Soundmanpt

Georgina is a Rythmic Gymnast and was a member of Team GB at the Olympics this year. She is the only member of Team GB to wear glasses in their photo on the Team GB website.

I can't really work out what sort of prescription she has. Her new glasses make her look her age. Her old ones looked ok but I do prefer her new ones.

Soundmanpt 25 Aug 2012, 10:34

Carrie

Georgina's new glasses look much nicer than her old pair. Her old pair the lenses appear much thicker looking and it doesn't look like she had AR coating on them so much too much glare on them. Her new ones are vary much the style. Is she the one that you referred to during the Olympics that normally wears her glasses all the time?

Carrie 25 Aug 2012, 08:39

So it does! How annoying. So sorry. All I can suggest is Google "Georgina Cassar Twitter" to find her Twitter page. Then keep scrolling down until you get to the post on 5th June.

 24 Aug 2012, 17:21

Carrie your link causes spam video windows to pop up all over my screen, even with a popup blocker. WTF.

Carrie 24 Aug 2012, 15:33

You're very kind, Pete.

I get the impression that Georgina is quite happy wearing glasses. On her Twitter page on 5th June she posted a photo of her wearing her new glasses "Loving my new glasses, Feel like a different person! #yay http://yfrog.com/ocigwybj "

I do need to lose a little bit of weight but certainly not 42 pounds! That is very good! My girlfriend doesn't want me to lose to much in case my boobs get smaller!

ehpc 24 Aug 2012, 10:16

Carrie - I am sure you are not overweight :) If you are, lose it :) I lost 42 pounds to achieve the nice trim figure I have now. Pete

ehpc 24 Aug 2012, 10:13

Geotgina Cassar is absolutely gorgeous in that clip, Carrie :) And great that she wore her glasses in such a public forum :) Pete

Carrie 13 Aug 2012, 15:46

Yay! I found the clip of Georgina Cassar leaving the Olympic Stadium after the closing ceremony http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZC-ZliVo_Y

She seems to get prettier every time I see the video or look at a photo of her. I'm more careful now about watching videos or looking at photos on the net. I don't want a repeat of when I got caught watching the Carly Rae Jepson video. Of course I love my girlfriend and fancy her more than any other woman.

I notice that someone posted as JP on 11th Aug - not me as I last posted here on 29th July. It's a good idea to use a unique name, people. :-)

Carrie 12 Aug 2012, 19:24

I saw the lovely, smiley Georgina Cassar wearing her glasses at the end of the London 2012 closing ceromony. She and some of her fellow, equally very attractive, team-mates waved and smiled at the tv camera as they walked past it to leave the stadium. I am now a secret fan of Rhythmic Gymnastics. Not so much the sport itself but mainly the girls who do it! The Team GB Rhythmic Gymnasts all seem to be slim, petite and pretty especially Georgina with her cool glasses. I missed the gymnastics when it was on tv so I didn't see what the other gymnast looked like. My girlfriend could pass off as one of the GB gymnasts as she is also slim, petite and pretty. I am also petite (ok, short!), a lot of people think I'm pretty but I'm not as slim as the gymnasts. I'm not fat or even chubby but I could do with losing a little bit of weight.

I did notice a lot more of the female athletes from all the countries were wearing glasses at the closing ceremony than at the opening ceremony.

Georgina Cassar and her fellow Team GB Rythmic Gymnasts didn't get any medals :(

I don't think she wore her glasses during their performance but does seem to wear them all the time the rest of the time judging by the photos that come up in Google Images.

Her boyfriend is very lucky - she's really pretty, wears glasses and is VERY bendy!

Soundmanpt 29 Jul 2012, 21:56

Carrie your quite right Geargina is very attractive, she probably won't be wearing her glasses when she competes. Maybe if she is dependent on them she may wear contacts. Those glasses would never stay on, even with a strap. I will have to try and catch when she competes.

JP 29 Jul 2012, 13:33

She probably won't wear her glasses in her event, but she might!

Carrie 27 Jul 2012, 20:59

I was watching the amazing opening ceremony of the Olympics on tv earlier and noticed several female athletes wearing glasses and most of those were quite good looking (some were not at all attractive). I wonder how many of them will be wearing their glasses when they take part in their events. I'm not much of a sports fan so I don't think I can sit through hours of sport just in case there's a hotty wearing glasses and there's thousands of athletes. I will try to watch Victoria Pendleton in her cycling events as she is gorgeous and wear glasses sometimes (I think she wears contacts most of the time). Another "Team GB" athlete I find very fanciable is Jessica Ennis. I'm not sure what sports she does but I don't think she wears glasses as I can't find any pics of her wearing them.

Carrie 06 Jul 2012, 14:43

Just found out that occasional glasses wearer and hot cyclist Victoria Pendleton will represent Britain in the Olympics this year. I might just watch her races!

On the olympics them I have seen a few nice girls with glasses taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay around Britain. Some I've seen on tv and others I've seen on the live video on the BBC website. I've probably missed loads as well. There are hundreds of people taking part and it goes for about 12 hours every single day! It is strangely addictive watching a complete stranger running or walking with an Olympic torch! The security guards that run or walk with the Torch Bearer are very fit (and some of them quite hot) police officers. I'm sure I saw one of the female guards wearing glasses the other day but the live camera very rarely shows a good shot of any of the guards unless they are the one that switches one torch off and the next one on as the torches meet. I keep checking the live video when I get a chance - just in case. I think there was one fairly good looking girl with glasses running in the English county of Suffolk on Thursday (I forget which town it was). It starts off again at 6:52am UK time tomorrow (Saturday) from Chelmsford in Essex and finishes in Cambridge in Cambridgeshire (the famous University city) at 6:46pm (yes, they are the official times! Why not 6:50am or even 7:00am? Very strange.

If you want to try your luck at possibly seeing a good looking girl with glasses here's the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/torchrelay (the runners/walkers are male and female and all ages so you might never see what you are looking for) I'm afraid you will have to work out the time difference for your part of the world yourselves! :-)

Looking for information on Jennifer Capriati I could not find any pictures of her wearing glasses but I did find an article about her failing her driver's vision test and getting glasses. It went on to say that she wore glasses of court, I assume full time, and contacts for tennis matches. It went on to say that she had laser surgery but it must not have worked so well because she stated she has to wear her glasses quite often still. Wish i could have found out more, like what went wrong with her surgery etc.

Soundmanpt  01 Jul 2012, 18:33

Yes! Thank you, Yeah I think it was a sports article about her. Not sure what she is doing these days. Am I also correct that she also had some other issues or run ins with the police. Not real sure about that either?

Your thinking of Jennifer Capriati.. That article was in tennis magazine.

Soundmanpt 01 Jul 2012, 10:37

Carrie

I know what you mean about remembering the names of some of the players these days, it's hard to keep up with so many new young players coming along each year. Maybe someone can enlighten us as to her name.

I agree it would be nice to see Anna wearing glasses but not too likely. If anything she may wear contacts.

A good many years ago I recall a very young attractive American girl that was a rising star in tennis. When she became 16 she went for her drivers license and she failed the vision test. She and her parents were shocked that she needed glasses. Of course she went straight to contacts There were a few pictures of her away from tennis wearing glasses. The odd thing was she seemed to be a better tennis player when her vision was still uncorrected then after she got contacts. She continued to play tennis but never made it very big and was out tennis at an early age. The amazing thing is that she somehow must not have been given an eye exam much earlier in her career. Tennis is based on having very good hand eye cordination and having blurred vision had to make that hard for her. i can't remember her name either, but maybe someone else can help.

Carrie 30 Jun 2012, 10:41

Does British tennis player Elena Baltacha wear contacts now? She used to wear glasses pretty much all the time. I saw a bit of Wimbledon the other day and she wasn't wearing glasses. I can't make up my mind about her sometimes she looks a bit butch and other times she looks very feminine and sort of fanciable.

Also, I think it was Thursday evening, I briefly saw another female tennis player wearing glasses at Wimbledon, but I can't remember her name. I think it began with a B and I think her her was brownish. I can't even remember what nationality she was! She was quite pretty though.

Of course it would be wonderful if Anna Kournikova wore glasses!

I'm not a huge sports fan but I do occasionally watch Wimbledon when it's on. I don't just watch it for the the hot female players in their short tennis skirts and tight tops (but it has become more of a reason to watch ever since I realised I was into girls!), some of the men are ok too! Oh yeah, and the games can actually get exciting at times!

Unusual? Not at all.

It sounds like you lead a sheltered life or something if you never heard of famous black female tennis players of the past including Althea Gibson, Ora Washington, or Zena Garrison.

They were long before Venus or Serena Williams.

lentifan 10 Jun 2012, 19:23

About 20, or maybe even 30, years ago there was a professional tennis player called, I think, Camille Benjamin. I think she was American.

She was unusual for two reasons. First, she was black and there were very few African-American female tennis players at that time. Second, she wore glasses on court and my memory is that she had a surprisingly high minus Rx.

She's probably a grandmother in contacts now, but I remember her. Does anyone else?

Revolver 10 Jun 2012, 11:49

Oakley just brought out a new frame collection they're calling Crosslink, and marketing as a frame that can be used for sports and also for daily wear.

They look very much like other Oakleys of the sports genre, bold colors, plastic, large eyesize, slight wrap, and library (straight back) temples.

Poked around their website at oakley.com but couldn't find them there, even by typing in Crosslink under product search. Guess maybe they're so new that they haven't updated their website yet.

Ree 10 Jun 2012, 08:22

Soundmanpt

Thats right. Shevodoa had her glasses designed and made by a sports company and they look well suited for sports,, rugged and well fitted.

Can anyone estimate her rx.

Soundmanpt 09 Jun 2012, 14:49

Yes Billie Jean wore glasses before anyone ever thought of making sport goggles. Now like this young lady she is lucky enough to have glasses that wrap on all sides of her eyes so her vision should be about the same as how people see with contacts. This girls glasses look like they were made just for her as they fit under here yes as well as on the sides.

Revolver 09 Jun 2012, 13:11

Yes, Billie Jean Moffett King was a pioneer in a lot of ways, very few athletes in any sport wore glasses then. In an interview once she gave great credit to her glasses for her career (think she said she got them in her early teens) because she said she couldn't do much without them. Besides the plastic frames, for a period of time she wore the octagonal rimless gold cable temple wire frames, of the type also worn by the late Secy. of Defense McNamara.

Melyssa 09 Jun 2012, 10:53

Also, Billie Jean King seemed to have a rather decent career as a tennis player while wearing plastic-framed glasses all the time. And she is still the "face" of the Philadelphia Freedoms of World Team Tennis.

Revolver 09 Jun 2012, 10:28

Steve's post about a tennis player just getting a correction seems to be history repeating itself. In the early 80's Martina Navratilova dominated women's tennis, but in late 1984-early 1985 her game deteriorated at the age of 28.

She got her eyes tested and started wearing glasses, Sports Illustrated ran a great story on her resurgence that included the role of the glasses, I dug the story out after seeing Steve's clip. There was a great photo of her at the caption showing her hitting a forehand with her semi rimless large aviator style frames on. The text said her eyesight had "deteriorated from an excellent 20/15 to a slightly nearsighted 20/40". She won the first major she played in shortly after getting her glasses and whipped Chris Evert Lloyd 5 sets to 1 for the Virginia Slims championship. The photo next to that passage showed her holding the glasses by the bridge, up above her forehead to clean them, which gave a great view of the prescription which was probably in the -1.00 to -1.50 range.

And it ended with a cute comment, in a practice session with her coach the writer said "Natravilova missed a volley and quickly realized she had forgotten to don her new specs. After retrieving them she warned 'Now I am really going to kick ass'".

Thanks guys! I tried to google picture of her wearing glasses and nothing came up except about different brands of sunglasses that I would guess she endorses.

Wonder if like another female racer that was an Indie driver that got lasik when she was around 18 and her eyes had not stablized and she was last seen again wearing glasses. Could be the same thing, maybe she jumped the gun and had it done too soon. Sure sounds like she is wearing glasses from her comment on Tweeter.

Now if only some pictures might appear of her wearing glasses. That would be even better.

Milo 13 Dec 2011, 17:41

Chrissi

I knew he had laser done but I didn't know he had a "touch-up" done in 2007. I don't know where he went in 1999, but I know around 2007 or 2008 he was advertising for

"TLC" It is very possible that he went to TLC in 1999 as well because they offer a warranty that as long as you get exams each year if your vision changes and becomes more than -1.25 they will redo it at no charge. this is really very common and i'm sure other places offer the same deal. It is not because the surgery failed it is because the patient's eyes were still changing when they had the orginal lasik done. If someone is considering getting it done that is something you should be sure they offer unless you don't have a problem with maybe needing glasses again in the future.

Chrissi 19 Aug 2011, 22:59

Hey all, not sure if anyone has brought this up in the past and not trying to spark up any kind of debate, but today for some reason I looked up Tiger Woods on Wikipedia and it says that in 1999 he had laser eye surgery (minus 11, apparently) and he had the surgery again in 2007. Interesting, I never knew that. Anyway, thought I'd post it.

A.P.,

Yes and no. I wore red frames during the game, but blue frames for bowling because I wore a blue Phillies' jersey, which I would not have worn had they lost.

A.P. 01 Apr 2011, 12:11

Melyssa, are you remembering to wear your red glasses for opening day? Go Phillies!

From the pictures I found of Ryne Duren on Google, it looks like his prescription was maybe around -3 or -4. Maybe that's bad for someone in the sports world, but far from the "Coke bottle" glasses they described on Wikipedia about him.

Look up Sebastien Bourdais, a formula 1 driver. He always wears glasses--there are many pictures of him in helmet and glasses.

Jose 01 Mar 2011, 05:25

Jennifer, have not seen him in glasses while driving. Can you wear glasses under those helmets?

Jennifer 28 Feb 2011, 14:13

Jose, have you seen Kurt Busch wearing glasses while driving? That would be a sight!

Jose 27 Feb 2011, 15:47

Looks like NASCAR driver Kurt Busch is wearing glasses again.

Cliff Lee's signing was just a tad late;

Having it during Chanukah would have been great.

There's just one more thing that I have to say:

I'll wear my red glasses on Opening Day!

May Santa bring you on his sled

Maybe that's why Rick Wise was my favorite Phillies' player after Johnny Callison was traded to the Cubs and before Wise himself was traded to St. Louis for Steve Carlton. Wise wore what looked like clear frames.

Jennifer 12 Oct 2010, 12:03

We need some Hot baseball players with glasses so the ladies can drool over. Oh the 70's were the days...

 08 Oct 2010, 23:35

I lived in St. Louis once but I'm feeling much better now.

Melyssa 08 Oct 2010, 13:45

Soundmanpt,

That's very nice of you to cheer on the Phillies. I rooted for the Cardinals (not easy with Scott Rolen on the team then) in 2006 against the Mets (with Billy Wagner, an even bigger POSADA than Rolen, but less than J.D. Drew). That pitcher you referred to, Cueto, pitches Sunday night, and the Phillies beat him 22-1 last year. And I cannot recall what glasses I wore during that game. :)

Melyssa 08 Oct 2010, 13:42

RDI,

I generally decide on Saturdays what glasses I will be wearing and when during the following week, giving each pair one wearing per week. Certain days, like my birthday and major holidays, I wear the same color or colors every time.

Soundmanpt 07 Oct 2010, 21:31

Melyssa

Just so you know since my Cardinals aren't in it this year I am rooting for your Phillies. I have no use for Cinnciatti after there wacko pitcher kicked our backup cater in the face with his spikes and besides nearly blinding him he did need stitches and had a con cussion and decided not to play again and retired. I like Roland and Edmonds but I can't root for them.

Jennifer

We feel your pain here in St. Louis as well.

RDI 07 Oct 2010, 15:32

Melyssa,

Did I read correctly that you have a schedule for wearing your glasses? How far out do you plan?

Melyssa 07 Oct 2010, 14:51

Chino,

I purchased the vast majority of my drop-temples in the 1980s and 1990s, when the various discount opticians in the area had lots of them. I do wish the style would return, with a stipulation that no one on Medicare can wear any until I get the frames I want. LOL

Melyssa 07 Oct 2010, 14:49

Jennifer,

The one good thing about the Dodgers being in the playoffs would be to see family members when the Phillies are the opponents. Also, since the Dodgers left Brooklyn, they have 4 world championships to the Phillies' 2, most of which came before your time (like the Eagles here).

Unnamed Poster,

No, I was not wearing red frames for the Phillies, as none of those glasses were on the schedule. I wore tortoiseshell octagon frames. Of course, I cannot remember what glasses I wore for Doc Halladay's perfect game, or for the Phillies' 2008 clincher. I did wear blue frames when my team and I won our league's bowling championship in 2006. That I remember. :)

Jennifer 07 Oct 2010, 12:55

Melyssa, your Phillies are doing good. Wish my Dodgers were in the Playoffs.

Chino 06 Oct 2010, 19:12

Melyssa, where do you find drop-temple frames?

 06 Oct 2010, 18:58

Melyssa, congratulations to the Phillies! Did you wear red frames to watch the no-hitter?

Melyssa 30 May 2010, 07:28

DTE,

Of course, I definitely still wear drop-temples, 11 pairs now, as they are my all-time favorite frames. And if there are any pictures of me and/or my frames out there in cyberspace, someone took them without my knowledge. And if so, I'd like to see them myself.

Drop-Temple Enthusiast 29 May 2010, 12:14

Melyssa,

I am new here, so forgive me. Do you still wear drop-temples? If so, any chance we can see a photo of them?

And last night, this lady in glasses, celebrating the 26th anniversary of getting her first pair of drop-temples, bowled 3 games each over 200 all the while distracted (like everyone else in the center) by our beloved Flyers coming back to beat the Boston Bruins to become the 3rd NHL team to overcome a 3-0 series deficit to win the series. To my knowledge, none of the current Flyers wear glasses outside the rink; at least I've never seen any pictures. :(

Melyssa 13 May 2010, 13:12

Last night, the women's U.S. Open bowling championship took place, and 4 of the 5 women wore glasses (Lynda Barnes, Carolyn-Dorin Ballard, Clara Guerrero, and Liz Johnson). Nu, who should win but the bare-eyed Kelly Kulick.

Jennifer 27 Apr 2010, 14:35

Well, I think the 1970's where the glory days for baseball and players wearing glasses. We will probably never see anything like it in any other sport. Thankfully, we have pictures to remind of it.

Love those guys in glasses!

Melyssa 27 Apr 2010, 12:58

I didn't become interested in hockey until the Broad Street Bullies came along, so I don't know if any other players besides Alger Arbour wore glasses. The Hanson Brothers probably wore planos for the movie.

As for Ryan Howard, he could use glasses, rather than making $125K per strikeout.

Luke 26 Apr 2010, 16:11

soundmanpt - You wrote "some may wear contacts". I suspect there are a LOT who wear contacts. I play in a recreational sports league and the majority of the players wear contacts while playing -- almost none wear glasses while playing, though many wear glasses otherwise. I think Lasik is still a little bit risky in many people's eyes (no pun intended), but contacts are almost automatic for myopic athletes...and a study recently found that 40% of Americans are myopic (higher for younger population). If we see someone, of young adult age, on the street and they aren't wearing glasses, it's kind of a crazy assumption to assume they are uncorrected.

soundmanpt 26 Apr 2010, 15:28

Melyssa and Jennifer

Back in the Al Arbour days hockey players did not wear any face gear, except glasses. By the way he played here in St. Louis at the time. Talking about female tennis players I remember when Jennifer Capriatti was still very young and a rising star she failed the vision test to get her first driver's license. She had no idea she needed glasses. I never saw her wear glasses while playing so she must have opted for contacts. It is surprising that she so well before getting correction, her vision had to be worse than 20/40 or she would have past the driver's test. I think she has since had lasix.

I just heard on the news that Mr. Howard of the Phillies just signed a 5 year $125,000,000 deal. As you may have heard we are wanting to wrap up Albert for life. I am sure it will take even more to sign him long term.

Jennifer 26 Apr 2010, 14:17

Melyssa, was this when the hockey players didn't wear helmets and face shields?

Also, we need to mention that the NFL also has some glasses wearing guys. Bob Griese, the quarterback for the Dolphins wore glasses when he played. I also heard that Cris Collinsworth was very nearsighted and wore contacts when he played for the Bengals.

Love those athletic guys who need glasses!

rob 26 Apr 2010, 13:54

And don't forget about the Hansen brothers in Slap Shot...

Other than Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King, let's think of some famous women athletes who wore glasses during competition...

Melyssa 26 Apr 2010, 13:06

Al Arbour, who coached the New York Islanders for 1500 games and won 3 Stanley Cups, also wore glasses when he played in the NHL. Now that must have been difficult, with the physical play and the cold ice involved.

Jennifer 26 Apr 2010, 10:43

Marie...Very interesting find on those BB players wearing glasses. I remember looking through my cousins old BB cards and finding many of these players in his collection of cards. Imagine these guys having to play with glasses. I can't even imagine a catcher, Darrell Porter, pulling his face mask off to catch a fly ball and his glasses coming off in the mask! Those must have been the good old days, for us mig lovers to watch them play with glasses. Great!

Melyssa 24 Apr 2010, 09:07

Greg Maddux wore contacts when he pitched, glasses on the other days, until he got Lasix. Fortunately for the Phillies, his pitching did not improve. A little bit of aging probably helped with that. With glasses, he was not-too-shabby in the looks department, though.

soundmanpt 24 Apr 2010, 08:34

That should have read 1990. Someday I will learn to type, really!

soundmanpt 24 Apr 2010, 08:33

Did you notice that there is not one player after about 190 wearing glasses? I think players now in even the lower minor leagues get laser surgery. Some may wear contacts.

myofan 24 Apr 2010, 08:20

How come they missed Ryne Duren? He was fabled for his coke-bottle glasses. In fact, hitters were supposedly afraid to bat against him (of course his lack of control also might have had something to do with it...)

Melyssa 24 Apr 2010, 07:50

Greg Luzinski, Kent Tekulve, and Dick "Don't call me Richie" Allen wore glasses when playing for the Phillies, as did pitcher Rick Wise. It would be nice to have an All-Star team of glasses-wearing ball players -- real glasses, not shades like the Wild Thing, Mitch Williams, wore. Maybe Ryan Howard should wear glasses when batting against left-handed pitching.

All4Eyes 23 Apr 2010, 21:57

Philosifer 09 Feb 2010, 10:52

Living in Canada, we see a lot of curling on the TV sports channel

There is seldom a match when one or two of the team members are not wearing glasse

This one is unusual because you can see the rings of the curling target reflected in her glasses ?

Lv2c4i 09 Feb 2010, 05:52

I suspect that vanity was the main factor in Dorothy Hamill's wearing/not wearing her glasses. There's a clip of her in the opening ceremony parade wearing her glasses and then snatching them off her face when she realized she was "on camera". She also wore glasses for the "figure" portion of the competition where precision was extremely important. And, after the Olympics, she had a Line of "Dorothy Hamill" eyewear for women/girls.

Myopic Grant 08 Feb 2010, 21:01

Wasn't the female character in "Ice Castles" supposed to be almost blind? I remember at the end, she fell down because she didn't see all the roses on the ice that people threw for her...good movie.

Puffin 08 Feb 2010, 16:11

Marvellous squinting there, but it's a shame she couldn't skate in glasses.

And 08 Feb 2010, 15:11

Ha, yes but I would imagine it would still be well dangerous over a certain prescription !

Melyssa 08 Feb 2010, 14:07

The only things the figure skaters need to see are their partners, and the side boards. Oh -- and Cindy Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins trying to hit them with a high stick. :)

Jennifer 08 Feb 2010, 09:13

Her glasses don't look very strong. I guess squinting worked for her to see her scores. It probably wasn't too hard for her to skate without correction. What does everyone think?

There's no such thing as 'oversize' glasses.

 05 Feb 2010, 12:36

Dorothy Hamill skated her way to fame in the 1970s while in a serious blur. In this video, the myopically magnificent Ms. Hamill, after completing her performance, showed her world-class squint repeatedly in a futile attempt to read the electronic scoreboard (all after the 4:15 mark). Can anyone here post old photos or video of Dorothy wearing her trademark over-size glasses?

Daniel does often wear Oakley, in the last few days my local paper here in New Zealand has had photos of him wearing at least 3 different pairs, 2 were Oakley. Not sure what brand his playing pair are. Many optical shops here have great posters of him advertising Oakley, and libraries have posters of him promotimg reading.

Redfox 10 Dec 2009, 03:29

I know he might not be known that well in the States but Danny Vettori has been fantastic for the image of glasses wearers in the countries where people follow cricket (England, Aus, NZ, S Africa, India/Pakistan etc) He has always openly rejected contacts and taken his specs onto the field, and his persona as New Zealand 'action man' (ie captain, great strategic thinker, best bowler, classy batsman, carries the team etc etc) he's made glasses something you associate with an athlete not just a bookworm. Kids with glasses love him.

Does anybody have any idea what type of frames these ones are:

Olga Korbut is interviewed in "The Red Files", a public television program from 1999. She was 44 at that time, and I imagine only recently presbyopic. She wears large wire frames accessorized with a thin gold chain in the interview.

Her feature sequences appear around the 28:00 and 48:00 marks of the program.

In addition, the southpaw Tish Johnson cut her hair short, let it go gray, and got either contacts or Lasik. To that look, add her rock-jaw chin and terrific sense of humor, and you have a female doppleganger of Jay Leno. They could be brother and sister.

Melyssa 16 Feb 2009, 07:23

I checked out that Youtube item from Bo Burton. It seems as though the women pro bowlers all changed their glasses to metal or rimless, or dumped them as soon as I got cable and was able to watch the LPBT shows. I guess they didn't want to upstage me. LOL

Debbie McMullen did wear drop-temples on the shows she made, but Aleta Sill went rimless as did Carol Gianotti, who did wear cat's-eyes in a bowling photo in a magazine.

Interview with Daniel Vettori:

http://caribbeancricket.com/news/2007/04/18/2385

You wear glasses; I wear glasses and I have just always wondered how do you manage to play in them, especially with the helmet on. Has the glasses ever got in the way?

No, not at this stage. I’m sure it’s going to happen one day but I’ve worn glasses since I was three years old, so I’m pretty comfortable with them. I’ve tried contact lenses but it’s not something that’s for me, so I’ve just got to persevere with them.

Katy 07 Feb 2009, 09:38

Oh my god that Daniel Vettori is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous! I'm moving to New Zealand.

spexfan 06 Feb 2009, 13:44

I read somewhere (maybe on this thread!?) that Vettori typically wears glasses because his Rx is unusual and has a high amount of astigmatism - and is therefore hard to correct with contacts. Which makes sense. Also, you can see the 'skewed' effect of an astigmatic lens in some of the pics.

nzoptic 06 Feb 2009, 10:34

Daniel Vettori is still the captain of the New Zealand team who just happen to have beaten Austalia in a one day game AGAIN. When the team arrived in Australia he was interviewed and was wearing a great rectangular black plastic frame. In New Zealand he features in a range of Oakley Frame posters, posters advertising the benefits of reading and using libraries, and posters and television advertisments promoting eyecare for children. Nice

Julian 06 Feb 2009, 06:35

2. Her vision is better with glasses than without.

Now there's a surprise!!!!

hooked 28 Aug 2008, 23:48

I'm living in Switzerland and this evening is the Letzigrund meeting in Zurich so there was an article about Tia and something about her glasses this morning in the newspaper.

Some small excerpts for this article:

1. She can't wear contacts due to an eye infection.

2. Her vision is better with glasses than without.

3. She has a contract with a glasses manufacturer

kisal 28 Aug 2008, 05:54

I was fortunate enough to see the very brief coverage that NBC in the US gave to Tia's gold medal winning Olympic high jump. And then I OD'd on all the lovely pictures in the link below. Not only is she amazingly beautiful with fabulous legs, but what just knocks me out is that she wears her specs while running, jumping, etc. And not clunky sports glasses, but her gorgeous (and I think quite "suitable") designer frames. This really shows that GWG's can do anything! I'm sure as the first female gold medalist for her country, that Tia is quite a superstar in Belgium.

Leon 26 Aug 2008, 07:37

Before I forget: the CEO also said that her glasses were done in special 1.67 index lenses and that she'll be choosing new frames later this year...

Leon 26 Aug 2008, 07:34

Dutch newspaper 'De Volkskrant' has an article today about athletes and 'the coolness of wearing glasses'. Hoya's CEO is quoted, stating that Tia Hellebaut's Rx is about -6 with -3 astigmatism...

RL 24 Aug 2008, 09:34

Tia is drop-dead gorgeous!

Cut-in UK  24 Aug 2008, 04:05

Clearly an astute and well advised girl. In the list of sponsors on Tia's website, 'Hoya' features prominently. Good to know optical companies who will sponsor !

Chris 23 Aug 2008, 09:40

@Adalle

Tia is always wearing glasses in public.

She got problems with contacts, so she cant wear them.

Maybe now she can afford a more suitable pair.

Phil 20 Aug 2008, 02:21

In today's Times there's a picture of the black girl with the unspellable name who won the 400 metres gold medal yesterday. She's wearing plastic frames with what looks like a significant minus rx. Rather nice!

Doreen 13 Aug 2008, 14:48

austrian swimmer markus rogan used to wear glasses/contacts - and probbly still does.

Jennifer 13 Aug 2008, 08:20

Jdmyth, thanks for the information. I will definately keep an eye out for those two. There just had to be some MIGs in the Olympics!!!

jdmyth 12 Aug 2008, 17:33

For all the MIG fans, keep an eye on American swimmer Aaron Piersol and German gymnast Fabian Hambuchen, both glasses wearers.

Philosifer 08 Aug 2008, 10:46

Part of the explanation may be that it is just indicative of the number of girls there are around who wear contacts most of the time ?

But in Beijing the air quality is so bad that glasses are a lot safer for the eyes ?

zorab 08 Aug 2008, 06:59

I'm just watching the Olympic Games opening parade of athletes. I'm amazed how many gwgs there are in the national teams. I wonder if there is a site with a mug shot of every athlete taking part.

Mac 20 Jul 2008, 22:45

Had not heard about Busch having lasik, but it has been several years since I've seen him in glasses. Wonder if brother Kyle has also been a glasses wearer.

Karen X 07 Jul 2008, 09:20

Did someone post a link here a year or 2 ago to a photo of Maria Sharapova wearing prescription glasses or was I just dreaming? I haven't seen a decent enough close up photo of her to tell if she wears contacts. I'm sure plenty of the straight guys on here would like to see such a photo as would plenty of the gay or bi girls that look at this site! (I can't be the only one!)

If someone knows the link please post it here. Thanks.

Saw Steve Spurier (NCAA football coach) on the sidelines in strong minus glasses. Had to be double digit Rx.

Doreen 28 Jun 2007, 05:08

As promised, the translation of the German article:

"The newest trend among top football players: Men wear glasses

With glasses like these you look much better. They accentuate your face, you gain charisma, a touch of elder statesman is in the air.

The trend setters are among others Romario and Ronaldo.

Get yourself glasses, if you want to look better. If you do not need them, you could use plain glass."

Then people start discussing, whether is is an insult or not to wear planos while others really need glasses.

Kaka has eye surgery

Published: Saturday, 09 June 2007 05:05:32

E-mail this article - Print this page

MILAN: AC Milan star Kaka has successfully undergone eye surgery to treat defective vision, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported yesterday.

The 25-year-old Brazilian was operated in a clinic in Modena, 240 kilometres south of Milan, where he had myopia and astigmatism corrected through laser surgery.

So far, Kaka had played wearing contact lenses, which only in part corrected his vision. In the past season, he scored 10 goals in the Champions League, helping the Devils win their seventh European title. (DPA)

Julian 24 Jun 2007, 04:31

Just another thought: they missed out on David Beckham, who apparently used to wear glasses with plano lenses as a fashion statement - how's that for trendsetting?

Julian 24 Jun 2007, 04:28

Kaka had lasik? Oh woe, woe!

But thanks Doreen; look forward to it.

Doreen 24 Jun 2007, 04:15

I'll translate it some time next week, when my exams are over.

Fran 06 Jun 2007, 16:27

I think I heard something about Ronaldo wearing glasses, does anyone have photos

Julian 09 May 2007, 08:49

Yes, I'd noticed that too; very perplexing. But I've just been looking at an album of older photos of Sebastien on one of the guysglasses groups on Yahoo - No 7 I think - and in several of those the distortion through his lenses suggests that what he has is quite a lot of astigmatism with a mixture of myopia and hyperopia.

mattp 09 May 2007, 07:51

Concerning Sebastien Bourdais' RX. My guess is -4 to -5. The side view in picture 15 on page 1 shows some significant edge thickness, even granted the lenses are probably hi-index.

And, Julian, I think the apparent cut out in the last picture on page 1 is the shape of the helmet lining squeezing Bourdais' face, not distortion caused by plus lenses. Look at the other side of his face--the background is the same shape.

Julian 08 May 2007, 16:48

Puzzling...the last photo on page 1 seems to show cut-OUT rather than in, suggesting a plus Rx

Myopic Grant 08 May 2007, 08:33

At the most, I'd guess -1.75, or -2.00.

Bwian 08 May 2007, 06:05

Have a look at some of the close up shots in this large collection of Sebastien Bourdais. There are many cool shots of his glasses. Anyone care to guess his prescription. http://www.champcarworldseries.com/Drivers/Photos.asp?DriverID=310

Curt 29 Jan 2007, 06:50

Hi! That last post was not from me. To the new Curt...I have been posting here on Eye Scene for about 10 years now. Could you possibly come up with another screen name??? thanks!

Curt 29 Jan 2007, 04:32

Will watch some of his tennis announcing and see if glasses are close by.

Julian 27 Jan 2007, 05:48

Agreed

Smudgeur 27 Jan 2007, 03:49

John McEnroe born 16th February 1959, which makes him 48 next month.

Some would say quite late to get the first signs of presbyopia, certainly not early.

Julian 27 Jan 2007, 03:09

How old is McEnroe? If as I suspect he's a bit young for presbyopia, it could be latent hyperopia becoming manifest, and a need for full time correction. Probably with contacts. Where was the atricle by the way?

Cactus Jack 26 Jan 2007, 20:03

Geoff,

When was the last time you saw John McEnroe reading anything (but the riot act)on the tennis court?

C.

Dark Eyes 01 Sep 2006, 14:06

Jennifer,

Well we can hope!

Jacques has said there are other drivers in F1 who wear contacts, but none of them are brave enough to wear glasses, but he would not name them. The only other driver who is open about wearing glasses/contacts to drive is Ralf Schumacher, who has certainly come in for his share of stick over it.

It is interesting to note, that it seems mainly F1 that has this prejudice, the American series’ do not seem at all bothered.

Jennifer 31 Aug 2006, 13:37

Dark Eyes,

I've noticed this too. In NASCAR, Kyle Petty has been wearing glasses for a long time. I think he switches back and forth between contacts and glasses. Maybe we'll start seeing more wearing glasses! I hope!

Dark Eyes 31 Aug 2006, 12:15

There seem to be more racing drivers with glasses these days, not something you think would have happened a few years ago.

There's Sebastien Bourdais who drives in Champ Car, not particularly nice looking.

And the very handsome Jacques Villeneuve who drives in Formula 1, he has said that some people told him not to even bother trying to become a racing driver because he wore glasses. He won the World Championship in 1997, but this still did not silence these people and his eyesight has been mentioned several times as a factor to any accidents he has had. Unfairly of course, as all racing drivers have accidents at some point.

I wonder if it is just coincidence, or that I've only noticed since then, but since Jacques started in F1 in 1996, there seem to be a lot more racing drivers with glasses.

Brian 13 Aug 2006, 21:48

Did anyone notice, that Indy Car Driver Sarah Fisher is wearing glasses again. I believe she got LASIK at 19 years old between the 1999 and 2000 season but she was wearing specs at the race this weekend at Kentucky. I wonder if she might have got LASIK too early in life and her myopia was still progressing. Some pictures of her this weekend are posted on her website http://www.sarahfisher.com/photos/photos.html

Speaking of female race drivers, Erin Crocker, who drives in the Craftsman Truck Series, wear glasses on a regular basis while driving. Her pictures can be seen on her website http://www.erincrocker.com/index.php

Forza Tia 0-0

JJ 09 Aug 2006, 09:34

Tiger's prescription was -11. Had lasik done at The Laser Center (TLCVision.com. Tiger is featured on their web site.

Jan 09 Aug 2006, 02:49

Yeah, I'm thinking I read that his prescription was pretty high, like between -9 or -11.

I understood Tiger Woods had had lasik years ago.

still 08 Aug 2006, 14:11

I don't know if this has already been mentioned - I heard a radio commercial today in which Tiger Woods relates that he wore contacts for a long time, but has lately had LASIK, and no longer needs them.

French defender Lilian Thuram wears glasses (off-pitch of course): http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Photo/magazine/Magazine2005/392615_MEDIUMSQUARE.jpg

There's a famous story about Dutch player Joop van Daele, who wore his glasses during matches in the 70s. When he scored a goal against Estudiantes from Argentina in 1970, one of the Argetinian defenders took his glasses and broke them with his feet.

Some Dutch artist wrote a song called 'Het brilletje van Van Daele' ('Van Daele's pair of specs'), which made it into the Top 40 :-)

Julian 15 Jul 2006, 22:41

But of course when they play they need to be bareyed or else in contacts. Then again, a while back that noted intellectual David Beckham went through a phase of wearing plano glasses 'cause he thought he looked good in them. He did, too. Is that vanity or is that vanity?

 15 Jul 2006, 15:45

The fact that I have seen very few premiership footballers ever wearing glasses can only mean two things. One they are too vain, or two, the theory that glasses and intelligence go hand in hand is proven correct. I suspect the latter theory more adeptly desribes the situation!!

Gregory 15 Jul 2006, 03:41

scroll down and you fnd some pics of kaka wearing glasses:

http://www.fantasticokaka.it/foto_4.html

I guess around -3

john 15 Jul 2006, 03:17

I can't remember where I saw them, but the pics of Kaka showed very respectable rings and cut-in! Minus 5, I'd guess.

Julian 13 Jul 2006, 23:49

I checked him out on GettyImages Editorial and out of 36 pages there were two shots of him in glasses - at a press conference (page 15). He doesn't seem to wear glasses to play for some reason ::) and he wasn't wearing them at his wedding either. They look good on him but I couldn't get any idea of the prescription. I've posted them on the Yahoo group SPECtacular_athletes.

Filthy McNasty 13 Jul 2006, 14:30

Aren't names wonderful when you take them out of their native culture and plunk them somewhere else. I shudder to think what my name might mean.

Oh really, sydneycider! It was a reference toi what I posted on 'Actresses' the other day. Here is it again:

David Beckham apparently used to appear in plano glasses 'cos he liked the way he looked. Photo and note at the bottom of this page: http://www.geocities.com/electra_the_migfetish_lady/celebs.html

I suppose curling counts as athletics. If so, check out the lovely Shannon Kleibrink from the Canadian Women's curling team at the winter Olympics, on a TV set near you now.

Phil - the Scottish women won a gold medal at the last Winter Olympics in 2002 (Calgary). I remember the gwg in question too - she's very nice. Her name is Janice Rankin. What I don't know is whether she is in the team this year.

Phil 16 Feb 2006, 10:25

Are the lady curlers in action yet? There was a lovely Scottish gwg in the team that did so well at the Commonwealth games.

Katy 16 Feb 2006, 10:06

Has anyone seen any of the men's curling at the Winter Olympics? Not the most exciting sport, but so many of them have glasses - there seems to be at least one in each team. Somehow it is strange to see Olympic competitors with glasses, but very sexy - it must be like that glasses at the gym thing. The Italian team has the most gorgeous mig (plastic frames) - haven't managed to find pics yet.

Dame Kelly Holmes was on a Question of Sport last night. She was given a question but couldn't see the picture because she had forgotten her glasses. She asked the audience if anyone had any distance glasses she could borrow! Someone offered, she got them, and then there were some nice shots of her peering through them to see the picture!

Great double page spread about Elena Baltacha in Saturday's Daily Telegraph, there were about four photos of her and one of her on the front page.

In part of the article the coach talks about when he saw her playing for the first time and said "she was wearing these large glasses that looked like binoculars, they were incredibly strong"!!

I've only ever seen Elena in rimless spex and there is no thickness to the lenses at all - could see have high index lenses?

Ted 25 Jan 2005, 10:36

Venus Williams sporting a pair of black rectangle glasses while watching sister Serena at the Aussie Open. My guess -1.50?

girnur 31 Aug 2004, 02:07

If they use the same system as in Sweden her VA is 20/100. Which is better than mine. I agree that she is somewhat squinting.

Filthy McNasty 30 Aug 2004, 17:36

No, I think she's squinting. And hot.

Andy 30 Aug 2004, 11:02

From the shape of chinese eyes you can't say if they're squinting because of myopia. I meean you know what you normally consider a squint, is simply the shape of a common chinese eye....

Filthy McNasty 30 Aug 2004, 08:21

She's obviously not THAT myopic - there's a pic linked from one of those pages that shows her watching a vedeo on a camcorder screen at a normal distance. She certainly is very cute, though.

glfc 30 Aug 2004, 00:25

Yeah Trevor, the Chinese diving goddess is absolutely stunning in a pair of rimless glasses in the stands of the men¡¯s 10m platform.

In her profile she is quoted saying that her eyesight in her right eye was awful at first, and then dragged down the eyesight in her left eye. She had surgery in 2002 for a retina detachment, and now her eyesight is only 0.2 (Chinese system). As a result, she can¡¯t even see the edge of the platform clearly, not to mention the scoreboard and the judges.

(All Chinese profile, note the glasses in her pocket) http://news.xinhuanet.com/olympic/2004-08/28/content_1905450.htm

It¡¯s amazing how easily she can grab the gold by doing the whole routine through feeling.

Unfortunately the only picture that I could find only has a trace of her glasses on her face.(scroll down)

http://gb.chinabroadcast.cn/4221/2004/08/29/114@283123.htm

She appears to be squinting during these moments, or is she?

Has anyone seen gary hall jnr in his spex? Oh my god! that man is god!

Julian 23 Aug 2004, 16:57

Thanks for the tip: Darren Mew looks good in glasses - and seems to wear them pretty well all the time.

Love and kisses, Jules.

guest 23 Aug 2004, 15:44

aaargh mention of Sally Gunnell...the woman with the most annoying voice on television and one of the very few cases where I actually don't care :)

Would be interesting to know about some of the others though - what about the lovely Suzy Perry? I wouldn't be a bit surprised if she wears contacts.

Hansel 23 Aug 2004, 14:29

Further on TV and the Olympics:

A couple of months ago there was the Fiona Bruce needing to use specs coutsey of an eye infection.

Looking at the presenters of the Olympics on BBC, I read Sharron Davies has had lasik. What about the others?

Jonathan Edwards-recently only seen with CLs.

Hazel Irvine -does she have CLs?

Sally Gunnell-CLs?

Not sure about Sue Barker.

Any ideas on these and others?

 23 Aug 2004, 10:21

Try Google Images for Darren Mew.

Julian 23 Aug 2004, 06:38

There are about a dozen shots of Gary Hall jr in his glasses on his official website: http://www.garyhalljr.com/photos_nyc2012appearances.php. I think they are all recent and suspect he is a new wearer and maybe not full time yet. My impression from one of the pics is that they're low minus.

As for Darren Mew, nothing to be found ::(

Love and kisses, Jules.

http://www.jmu.edu/montpelier/2001Fall/TiombeAbounds.shtml

 19 Aug 2004, 17:13

Her name is Tiombe Hurd and the event is triple jump

Mnyclp 19 Aug 2004, 17:03

Sorry didn't catch her name, but it was unusual

 19 Aug 2004, 15:26

my question is - what's her name? Sounds interesting.

Mnyclp 19 Aug 2004, 15:16

Did anyone watch the today show this morning? there was a female athlete who is legally blind competing in the triple jump or long jump one of the jumps. anyways they did a whole segment on her vision, and how she has had to overcome difficulties because of it. She wears contacts. she said with out them one of her eyes was in the 20/1000 area i think it was worse. Anyways, my question is what would that be in - diopters?

Robert 19 Aug 2004, 13:54

Yes I have read about this german athlete too. He mentioned that one of his lenses fell out thrice during the past weeks and that he feared he would have to do his competition with glasses on.

dillusionbr 19 Aug 2004, 13:35

Germany's youngest particpant in the Olympics is Fabian Hambüchen, 16 years old: http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u;=/040814/ids_photos_sp/r600690301.jpg

Because he was struggling with his contact lenses (he "broke" three pairs of them and is also suffering from an infection in his right eye), he needed to switch back to glasses. Sources differ somewhat as to the rx of his glasses: One paper mentions he is +3 and +5, while his optician's homepage is proud to announce that they were able to fit him with contact lenses correcting an astigmatism of +6.00 dpt.

mattp 19 Aug 2004, 11:50

For some time I've been following the career of the French race car driver Sebastien Bourdais. I've never seen him without glasses--even helmeted and buckled into the car, he wears glasses.

Anyway, below is an address to an article where Bourdais explains his vision needs and correction preference. I'd like to make this a link, but that may be beyond my computer skills. The picture of Bourdais included in the article is horrible!

It may be clutching at straws putting pro wrestlers in the "Athletes" section, but hmm anyway, go to the below section then click on the name "Traci" (in the first big group of names, near the bottom) it's got a fairly-sized pics gallery! And she's HOT!

Kix 16 Aug 2004, 20:34

I've done my share of looking for Andy Roddick pics--I was so thrilled when I found the one and now the website seems to have disapeared! And I've read that he only wears glasses for reading, the thing is, several months ago I swear I saw a picture in the sports section of a newspaper of he and Mandy Moore at a Lakers game and he was wearing glasses...of course, I've never been able to find that picture again either. Hmmph!

Helen 16 Aug 2004, 12:51

I found this snippet about Andy Roddick whilst searching:-

'Andy wears glasses for reading only, though he admits to hardly wearing them.'

Trying to find a picture. Really like him as well.

Julian 16 Aug 2004, 01:18

Any pics - of either of them?

 16 Aug 2004, 00:48

The British Olympic Swimmer Darren Mew usually wears glasses too.

Guest 15 Aug 2004, 19:30

American swimmer Gary Hall Jr. wore some black rectangular plastic-framed glasses during some pre-Olympic interviews. Some commentators suggested that the glasses and suit he was wearing was an attempt to shed his bad-boy image. Whether the look was intentional or not, the frames work well with his tanned, blond-hair blue-eyed complexion.

Anon 15 Aug 2004, 17:14

One of the female members of the British Olympic team wears glasses! Well I presume she was part of "Team GB" as she was wearing a tracksuit when I saw her standing behind Tony Blair (Britain's Prime Minister) when he was visiting them in Athens this weekend with the British media following his every move. The young lady I'm talking about has short blonde hair in a sort of side parting and is reasonably attractive. I don't know her name or what event/s she is doing or even if she is an athlete. Maybe someone else from the UK knows - I saw her on a BBC News report.

Kix 14 Aug 2004, 16:38

frusterating! And now I can't find the page using google either...if I can find it again, I'll re-post it.

Regarding Maverik's 15th June post, as I neither have a television nor a very strong interest in tennis, I had no idea Mary Pierce was GWG. As someone who is transfixed by blonde women wearing big plastic frames those pre-1992 photographs of her are a real find. Top discovery, Maverik!Especially the 1991 US Open picture (bottom right of the threefrom that tournament) where she is wearing HUGE plastic frames with her blonde hair up:)))))))))))) I melt with delight:) Great find, Maverik!

Yoyo 27 Jun 2004, 02:32

I think she looks pretty good. She did look better on TV than in any of the pictures I found (probably because they're action shots, and no one looks their best in those).

Maverick 15 Jun 2004, 08:15

Hi SCO, glad you liked the link. Since posting it Ive realised that pics of her in specs are more available than I thought. For instance in the following link all of her pics prior to 1992 have her wearing glasses. Enjoy !

http://www.mary-pierce.org/main_tournament_pictures.htm

SCO 15 Jun 2004, 08:02

Hello Maverick. That pic is a blast from the past. The only time I remember seeing a pic of her playing with specs on was when she was a newcomer to the circuit and there was a pic in the European newspaper. It must have been over 12 years ago.

Not 100% sure but those specs are the same ones (I seem to remember) as way back then. Have since seen her away from tennis in a few pics and her RX has increased.

Many thanks for posting that link.

Maverick 30 May 2004, 14:11

Mary Pierce. Not that great an image but pics of her in glasses are rare - can remember seeing one before where she is wearing them when playing.

Translation

Sorry for bad english.

And another task. You wear glasses!

Is this the new Carro look?

- I have been wearing glasses my whole life. Its only that Miss Klüft dont wanted to wear glasses some years. Now I have getting headaches and start to wear them again.

Do you use contacts when you compete?

- I have been trying, but everything flow together. My eyes and contacts dont fit so good together.

How is it to dont see sharp when you compete?

- I have done all my competitions as senior whith bad eyesight and everything have went vell.

So thats why you miss the wood plank in the long jump?

- No. Thath should you not write.

 09 Mar 2004, 07:11

Carolina Klüft looks great!

Any other pics of her in glasses?

The link posted below contains an interview; the last four questions are about her glasses, as far as I understand Swedish. Anybody able to translate???

Interested to read post below about people wearing 'obviously low rx' - does anyone know someone who has an obviously low prescription and know why they might wear them all the time? This is fascinating to me.

 29 Feb 2004, 08:16

Dave 24 Feb 2004, 11:58

A follow up to the previous link. Many of the curlers wear glasses with obviously weak rx's. They remove them when they're not curling. Some of them have substantial rx's and wear their glasses(or contacts)full time.

Some screen shots of the various curlers in action are available at http://www.geocities.com/david_dave_1960/

No thumbnails, just click on the filenames you want to see.

Dave 21 Feb 2004, 12:54

Curling fans in Canada! When you watch curling on tv they always give a close up of the shooter as they deliver the stone. This year's Tournament of Hearts features 7 GWG. See the teams: http://www.2004hearts.curling.ca/

Here's a link about a female baseball player. http://www.aagpbl.org/articles/arti_ss.html

The article states that she wore glasses and still did well in sports. And while we're on the subject of athletes, has anyone found any pics of skater Jamie Sale in glasses, I've heard that she's been spotted in them.

Did anyone else see the photo in People magazine of tennis champ Andy Roddick wearing glasses while courtside with girlfriend Mandy Moore?

Anon 05 Jan 2004, 16:16

I was channel hopping on Sunday night when I flicked over to BBC2 at just the right moment. They were showing the World Darts Championship which is being held here in the UK (ok I know calling darts players athletes is pushing the definition of the word). It was a womens match. One of the players was a young and very attractive blonde gwg (young and attractive - 2 words not normally associated with darts players!). She is called Mieke de Boer and here are some photos of her in glasses (she's in a pink shirt). http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5719.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5722.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5724.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5728.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5732.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5734.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5738.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5742.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5776.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5779.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5786.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5787.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5818.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5815.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5814.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5807.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5810.jpg; http://www.vdwschietsport.nl/darts/boer/s&db5812.jpg;

Pascal 10 Nov 2003, 07:33

Does anybody have pics of Martina Hingis,Anna Kournikova and other tennis players with glasses? Please, give me more inspirations.

PAULA 02 Nov 2003, 10:49

To all those people that keep asking why don't you wear contacts.I say ever since I was a young girl I wanted to wear glasses the thicker the better. I started wearing glasses around 5 judging from a picture when I was about 8 I would say my lenses were around -6.5D, Every time I went for an eye examination I would try to cheat to get stronger lenses, at 16 I was a -12.5.Every time I got new glasses I was amaised at how clear things could be. I am now 26 just got my first myodisks -1575. I will say they will take some getting use to. With out glasses I cant find my way around at at all. I am amaised at how dependent I have become but I love every minute of it. (strange girl) About a year ago I met this Bloke In an icecream parlour right away I noticed he was intreasted in my glasses.

I have to say I was intreasted to see why he was so intreasted in me. Finaly he told me he loved girls with glasses. We have been going out for some time. we are in love. I think glasses is a sexual thing wit a lot of men. Well thats all for now Paula00022@aol.com

does anyone have photos of people from the wwe (wrestling) wearing glasses

Julian 21 Oct 2003, 10:06

Oh yes, and HPB, if you CAN post any shots of Becks in specs...

Love and kisses, Jules.

Julian 21 Oct 2003, 10:04

There are a few pics on his website: http://sebastien-bourdais.com. Funny website though: most of the pics in the galleries of cars he's driving, not of him ::(

Love and kisses, Jules.

Mark 20 Oct 2003, 22:59

Sebastien Bourdais is a young cute bespectacled blond who's the lead driver for the Newman/Haas Racing Lola champ car team. In fact, on his profile at the Newman/Haas site, he's quoted as never being seen without his glasses. I became aware of him thanks to the November issue of Car and Driver magazine, which features a profile and several large photos of Bourdais. One in particular is a tight shot of his face and frames. They're silver rectangles and seem to be Oakleys but have black hinge-less temples (rubber?), a combination I've never seen before. Very nice. I'll be keeping an eye out for more.

HPB 06 Oct 2003, 15:58

I have some pics of Beckham in Specs. As a keen Man Utd fan I have kept articles for years. I read in the official MU magazine a while back that he is slightly shortsighted.

He also went out pre-Posh with a woman called stephanie L....cant remember off hand who was photographed with him and she wore specs too. I will try to find them from my archives and get them on here.

Ewanfan 09 Sep 2003, 13:58

Electra, I came accross that article, too. But I also read somewhere that Beckham won spectacle wearer of the year and in the past the recipients have had an Rx. So it's up for debate I suppose.

PS: any pics of Beckham in specs??

Electra 09 Sep 2003, 05:11

Regarding David Beckham. He may be a fraud:

http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/content_objectid=13353972_method=full_siteid=106694_headline=-A-SHY-BLOKE-UNAFFECTED-BY-HIS-FAME-name_page.html

 14 Aug 2003, 06:47

I recently met a handsome myopic guy.

My original guestimate on his RX was -6. As we talked and talked, the subject of glasses came up. He told me that he had to be very careful with his glasses since they were his one and only pair.

He told me that he had just played volley ball and had to find somewhere same to place his glasses while playing. I asked how well he could see to play. He told me that he could see the blurry ball enough to hit it when it came his way but could not see anyone on the other team or the net except for when he was in the front row.

I asked him if he knew his Rx. He took off and held out his glasses and told me he didn't know his Rx but to look at how powerful they were. I asked if I could try them on and he politely said no and that he rather hang onto them. He then put them back on.

This got me thinking that maybe his Rx is stronger than I thought. I didn't look to see how much smaller his eyes got either.

We talked some more and parted ways but not before exchanging contact information. We have been in touch. He has invited me to join him and his friends for volley ball.

J.R. 11 Aug 2003, 07:19

Here's a link to a recent article about Jason Phillips of the mets with a pic of him in his specs:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/08042003/sports/mets/2413.htm

Kix 04 Aug 2003, 21:01

Sue,

I looked online for pictures of Jason Kendall in glasses and didn't find any but typing "Jason Kendall glasses" into google produced links to a few newspaper articles which talked about him getting glasses. I guess a spring training eye exam lead to a perscription--at age 27. Too bad there seem to be no pictures, he's a good looking guy, almost a resemblance to Freddie Prinze Jr. and I bet he looks great with glasses.

I know the Mets catcher, Jason Phillips wears Rx goggles on the field although he doesn't do much for me looks-wise. I guess he tried contacts in the minor leagues but found them too cumbersome before switching to glasses full-time. I love baseball and I think it's always fun to see who wears glasses off the field.

Lucie 23 Jul 2003, 19:04

anybody seen david beckham pics on the internet...i don't live in london...so i haven't seen the picture you were referring to

Sue 23 Jul 2003, 16:52

Baseball player Jason Kendall supposedly wears contacts on the field, and glasses when he's not playing. Does anyone have pics of him when he's wearing his glasses?

Julian 08 Jul 2003, 18:48

Clare, I thought the SUN pic was anew one. He's appearing in a Spanish TV commercial as a Roman legionary, and the front page pic was of him in Roman soldier gear plus specs; th story was on another page. There was no comment about the specs.

Myodisc 08 Jul 2003, 15:39

Bert

Elena Baltacha was,as you say born in the former U.S.S.R (Ukraine I think) but she has spent most of her years in Scotland, where her father Sergio played football in the Scottish Premier league ( I think it may have been with Aberdeen, not too sure though, not a football fan) but she certainly is HOT. Not in the Kournikova class?, Hmmmm....

Don't know,I've never seen Kournikova in specs....

Myodisc

clare 08 Jul 2003, 13:57

Aha Julian, I think the very same pic was in today's Metro (cheap and nasty freebie tabloid distributed at London stations). It was David Beckham c1996 I believe, although the Metro version wasn't conclusive your post confirms what I suspected. Did he look good? Couldn't tell from what the guy on the train next to me *allowed* me to see, I think it was a profile shot.

Julian 08 Jul 2003, 05:01

THE SUN (vile tabloid newspaper IMHO) has David Beckham in glasses on the front page - wire aviators. I don't think they are non-Rx shades; they look low minus, and I have heard that he's a bit short-sighted.

Love and kisses, Jules.

Maverick 25 Jun 2003, 13:21

Baltacha is definitely not myopic - looks mildly longsighted to me.

Bert 25 Jun 2003, 10:04

Followers of the tennis at Wimbledon yesterday will have seen GWG Elena Baltacha, playing in rimless glasses, and then being interviewed after her game in fashionable brown-rimmed narrow rectangular-style glasses. Impossible to tell whether she is plus or minus. Not in the Kournikova class for looks but a nice change when probably most athletes who need glasses use contacts.

Too bad for us Brits - Baltacha was born in USSR but is now British - that she was knocked out in the first round.

JR 24 Jun 2003, 20:07

ESPN.com's main page right now has a Pic of L.A. Dodger Eric Gagne in his trademark specs he wears on the mound

Angelo 04 Jun 2003, 06:33

Iam a big fan of Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova.I have seen Martina with glasses, but just one picture.Do you have more pics for me?

And now something about Kournikova.I have seen one picture with Anna and her mother Alla Kournikova.Alla was with glasses and said that each member of her family is shortsighted. So Anna should wear glasses.Does anybody know something interesting about her?its would be great to see her with specs

P 02 May 2003, 21:39

I need to know how the number 18 Cortina did last season. tuspwr@mashell.com

Slimshady69 24 Apr 2003, 05:30

yo julio, i hope that is true that kournakova needs or has glasses that would make her the sexiest gwg ever. she does look like she squints a lot though so i hope its true. So does anybody know or have a picture or article?

Morgoonetta 23 Apr 2003, 16:19

How about Howie Long? Looks like a lot of astigmatism there. Think he's presbyopic yet?

Kix 23 Apr 2003, 08:33

Ok, this isn't really an athlete but it is sports related. For sports fans (living in the US) there is an anchor on ESPN's Sportscenter who is a pretty delicious Guy With Glasses. He has dark brown hair and a tawny complexion and the most discreet pair of rimless specs I have probably ever seen. I can't tell an Rx but he has done his best to pick out a pair that is almost invisible. I think his name is Neil Everitt and I usually see him on the weekend episodes.

Julio 23 Apr 2003, 07:54

Does anybody know something about Anna Kournikova?I read an article that she is shortsighted and really needs glasses.Does anybody picture of her with glasses?

Thanks

Alan 23 Jan 2003, 14:59

And not many baseball players wear glasses, either. Though Reggie did it, it's tough to hit with glasses on. Batters can't easily look straight ahead at the ball, so the edges of glasses frames and lenses make it tough to hit with them on. It might not make a big difference, but players at that level can't afford to lose any edge at all. Pitchers, on the other hand, can probably get away with it. Players on both sides could probably benefit from the safety of (proper) glasses, but that's never been a primary concern of most players in sports as far as I can tell.

holysmoke 23 Jan 2003, 14:27

Baseball has long been a sport where players have worn their glasses in games. Even some of the games superstars (Reggie Jackson) have played with their glasses on. In the U.S., very few players in any of the other team sports wear glasses on field.

JC 23 Jan 2003, 14:12

Greg Maddux had LASIK in the middle of the season a few years ago:

http://www.piedmontbettervision.com/news_testimonials_news.html

PennNP02 23 Jan 2003, 12:06

Greg Maddux is another one known to wear glasses, although I believe he does wear contacts for games.

JR 21 Jan 2003, 15:44

In baseball,

The L.A. Dodgers star closer Eric Gagne wears prescription goggles when he pitches due to a hockey injury and 2 of the World Champion California Angels relief pitchers, Brendan Donnelly and Ben Weber also wear glasses when they pitch.

There are others but I can't think of the rest of the top of my head

John 21 Jan 2003, 10:42

I know of some footballers who wear glasses, Raul, Laurent Blanc,Lillian Thuram and David Beckham is also mildly short sighted

Julian 20 Jan 2003, 22:16

Cool portrait of Daniel Vettori - and super-cool specs. Which, like all super-cool things, make him look hot :;)

Love and kisses, Jules.

GwGs 20 Jan 2003, 03:24

An extremely attractive blonde gwg tennis player by the name of Elena Baltacha wears nice oval rimless spex, i had quite a few photos of her playing at Wimbledon last summer before my site went down.

A New Zealand cricketer that wears glasses on and off the field. Just type his name (Daniel Vettori) and you'll get heaps of pics. Here's a portrait...

Wurm

Thanks for starting the Athletes category. Thought I am only attracted to females, I am really intrigued by the athletes both male and female relying on glasses and contacts, as opposed to Lasik.

The fact that I still see athletes relying on vision correction keeps me hopeful that Lasik is not all that it is cracked up to be. And who depends on clear vision more than athletes do?

I hope that more people post to this category, athletes who still rely on glasses and contacts. Probably just this summer, I spotted World Series hero Troy Glaus sporting specs, during an interview. And just off hand, I have also seen Giants shortshop Rich Aurilia wearing glasses as well. I have also seen basketball star Vince Carter in glasses, and during the 2000 or 2001? NBA All Star game, I recall Grant Hill leaving the game, because he lost a contact lens.

I would be very interested in hearing about other athletes who rely on vision correction, especially Canadian skater Jamie Sale. I have heard that she wears glasses. I wish someone would post a pick of her on eye scene.

UK swimmer Rebecca Cooke:

http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/020802/59/d6m4m.html

Daffy 19 Jan 2003, 14:42

I think that Jenifer Capriati did get lasik done. I think that she 'may' regret it though. Just last week here in Australia, in the Australian open, she lost early. In the proceeding match interview, she blamed her loss on her eyesight as a result of recent eye surgery. Is this a case where LASIK is not all it's claimed to be?

Spectator 19 Jan 2003, 14:17

Janice Rankin, a member of Scotland's gold-medal team at the Winter Olympics wears quite strong glasses or contacts. There's a nice picture of her in glasses on this page (scroll down a bit to find her):

http://www.strath.ac.uk/press/prism/iss192.htm

and there are a few others elsewhere which a Google search will find.

Maverick 19 Jan 2003, 13:57

Here is a pic of Martina Hingis in specs :

http://www.hingis.org/gallery/public/off89

Another tennis player who wears contacts (or did in 1999 at least) is Amelie Mauresmo.

Samuel 19 Jan 2003, 13:50

I read in a newpaper some years ago that Jennifer Capriati couldn´t start playing a tennis match because she forgot her contact lens and so she had to wait until someone brought them to her from the hotel she was sleeping.

So i´m sure she needed glasses, but i think i heared that she had lasik to some time ago,- but i´m not sure at all.

John 19 Jan 2003, 11:25

I once saw sharron davis presenting a sports programme, in which she was wearing glasses and she looked hot. Shame she has now had lasik. I also believe Martina Hingis wears glasses as well as Jennifer Capriati. Does any1 have pictures of any of the mentioned
